Afar shield

Ethiopia

Afar shield, Conical shield with flared base and rimmed in the edges, imitating a pointed hat. The shield is made from thick leather, possibly hippo skin and the outer surface of the shield is decorated with brass platings in the design of stylized patterns of plants and flowers. The shield is that of the gafa gassa, a parade shield offered as a gift to Ethiopian dignitaries and warlords.
